The 2026-27 Premier League season opened between 21 and 24 August, a week later than usual because of the 2026 World Cup. For an opening round, it delivered: a promoted side beat Manchester United, Brighton put four past Aston Villa, and a London derby was settled in three acts.

- Hull City 2 – 0 Manchester United — Ajayi (17′), Mendy (38′).
- Brentford 3 – 0 Tottenham Hotspur — Lewis-Potter (12′), Janelt (33′), Kayode (49′).
- Everton 2 – 0 Crystal Palace — Dewsbury-Hall (42′) opened the scoring in front of 51,820.
- Ipswich Town 2 – 1 Sunderland — Emersonn (24′), Clarke (90′); Angulo (39′).
- Nottingham Forest 0 – 1 Leeds United — Stach (88′).
Sunday 23 August

What stood out
Hull City produced the result of the round. Back in the top flight, the promoted side beat Manchester United 2-0 in front of 24,470 at home, with Ajayi and Mendy scoring before half-time. It is the kind of afternoon that explains why people watch this league to the final whistle.
Brighton were ruthless. Four past Aston Villa, including a Hinshelwood double in two minutes (30′ and 31′). Villa never turned up.
Newcastle and Liverpool gave us the wildest finish. The two sides traded goals and ended 2-2, settled by a Szoboszlai penalty in the eighth minute of stoppage time.
Chelsea won the London derby after twice being pegged back. João Pedro scored inside the first minute at Craven Cottage, and Fulham kept coming without ever drawing level.
Leeds executed the perfect away game: goalless for 87 minutes at Nottingham Forest, then Stach struck and they left with all three points.

The transfer window closes on 31 August, the same evening as Villa v Arsenal. Expect a noisy final week.
