Express Entry 2026: five new categories and the 12-month rule

IRCC targets five new occupations in 2026 and raises minimum experience from 6 to 12 months. What the changes mean for your Express Entry profile.

Immigration

In February 2026, IRCC announced an overhaul of Express Entry category-based selection. Five new occupational categories were added — and one quieter rule change matters enormously for many candidates: the minimum work experience required rises from six to twelve months. Here is what it means for your file.

What changes in 2026

Category-based selection lets IRCC invite candidates by occupation rather than by score alone. For 2026, five new groups are targeted: physicians, researchers, senior managers, transport professionals and skilled military recruits. The choices point clearly toward health, research, business leadership, logistics and defence.

The rule that changes everything: 12 months

For all renewed categories, the minimum experience required in an eligible occupation goes from six to twelve months. If you were counting on six months to be invited in a targeted round, your timeline just moved. Check exactly how much time you have accumulated in your eligible occupation before you submit or update your profile.

What this means for your profile

  • Check your occupation code. A category invitation depends on your position’s classification code, not the job title on your contract.
  • Recalculate your experience. Twelve months full-time, or the part-time equivalent, in the eligible occupation.
  • Document every month. Employment letters detailing duties, exact dates, hours per week and salary.
  • Do not neglect your overall score. General rounds still exist: language and education remain decisive.

And in Québec?

Québec keeps its own selection programs, separate from Express Entry for economic permanent residence. If your project is a Québec one, the federal announcement does not replace checking your eligibility for the Québec streams — the two systems coexist and do not share conditions.

Three reflexes to adopt now

First, verify at the source: the categories and their conditions are published by IRCC and may be refined during the year. Second, update your profile as soon as your experience crosses a new threshold. Third, be wary of guaranteed results: in Canada, only an authorized person may be paid to advise or represent you — our guide on how to spot a ghost consultant shows how to verify in five minutes.

Wondering whether these changes open or close a door in your specific case? Request a consultation — an hour of analysis beats an application filed in the wrong category.
