Certified translations: what IRCC really accepts

Who may translate your documents for IRCC, what must accompany each translation, and the partial-document trap that causes refusals.

Immigration

A rejected translation can send an entire application back. The rule is simple, yet almost everyone misunderstands it.

Who may translate

A translation for IRCC cannot be done by the applicant or by a family member, even a perfectly bilingual one. It must come from a recognized translator, or be accompanied by an affidavit.

What must accompany the translation

  • A copy of the original document
  • The complete translation, with no summary or omission
  • The translator’s attestation or the affidavit

The trap of partial documents

Translating only the useful page of a statement or certificate is a common cause of refusal. The document must be translated in full — stamps and handwritten notes included.
