Immigration
Waiting until the last week to file an extension is the best way to lose your status. Here is the timeline I recommend to every student.
Start very early
The processing times published by IRCC change constantly. The prudent rule is to file well before expiry, with every document already gathered.
The documents to prepare
- An up-to-date admission letter or proof of enrolment
- Transcript and proof of progression in the program
- Proof of funds for the requested period
- A valid CAQ for studies in Québec
- A passport valid beyond the requested period
If your permit expires during processing
There is a notion of maintained status that protects a person who filed on time, but it comes with strict conditions. Never assume it automatically applies to your case: check before you move.
