Immigration
The spousal open work permit lets your partner work for almost any employer in Canada. Here is how it works — and why refusals often happen for a reason that has nothing to do with work.
Who qualifies
The spousal open work permit depends entirely on the principal person’s status in Canada: student, skilled worker, or permanent resident in process. The conditions are not the same in each case.
Proving the relationship
This is where most files are won or lost. IRCC does not just want a marriage certificate: it wants to see a shared life.
- Dated photos, across several years and several places
- Leases, bills or statements at the same address
- Money transfers between you
- Letters from people who know the couple
The mistakes that cost dearly
An uncertified translation, an inconsistent date between two forms, a missing document with no explanation: these are the most frequent — and most avoidable — causes of refusal.
