Premier League: what to take from matchweek 2

Matchweek 2 stretched from Friday to Monday night, and delivered a seven-goal afternoon at Stamford Bridge, a statement from Manchester United, and an Arsenal side winning without ever getting out of second gear.

What stood out

Chelsea v Brighton was the game of the round. Seven goals at Stamford Bridge, a week after the Blues won 3-2 at Fulham. Chelsea keep winning, but conceding three at home says as much about the defence as the attack.

Manchester United answered the worst possible start. Beaten 2-0 at Hull the week before, they put five past Ipswich. The kind of response that settles supporters without yet proving much.

Hull City are the story. Having beaten United, the promoted side won 1-0 at Coventry. Six points from six for a club widely written off before a ball was kicked.

Tottenham are in trouble. Beaten 3-0 at Brentford, then 2-0 at home by Newcastle: no points and no goals scored in two matches.

Arsenal simply got the job done. A Saka goal, his second in two games, was enough at Villa Park. Six from six without ever needing top gear.

Liverpool keep dropping points. After the 2-2 at Newcastle, another 2-2 at home to Nottingham Forest. Two games, two draws.

The transfer window has closed

The summer window shut on 31 August, the same evening as Villa v Arsenal. Squads are now fixed until January: what you see is what these clubs have for the autumn.
