Fashion
The M.A.D. Festival is happening downtown right now, and all of it is free. The 26th edition runs from 20 to 23 August 2026 at Place des Festivals, in the Quartier des spectacles — a minute from Place des Arts. If you have just arrived in Montréal, it is probably the best possible introduction to the fashion scene here, and it will cost you nothing.
What to know
- When: Thursday 20 to Sunday 23 August 2026 — so you still have the weekend.
- Where: Place des Festivals, bordered by Sainte-Catherine, Jeanne-Mance, Balmoral and De Maisonneuve.
- Cost: the outdoor programming is entirely free.
- What is on: more than 110 designers, a market of 70 local businesses, runway shows, music, dance and visual arts.
Why it is worth it as a newcomer
A free outdoor festival is one of the rare places where you can read a city without spending anything or knowing anyone. You will see what people in Montréal actually wear at the end of summer — far more useful than any style guide. And because the programming mixes fashion, music and dance, you can give it an hour or a whole evening.
How to make the most of it
The market of 70 local businesses is a chance to discover designers from here without downtown boutique prices. Even if you buy nothing, note the names: several of these labels run warehouse sales in the autumn. Bring a light layer — late August evenings cool fast once the sun goes down, as we explained in our back-to-school wardrobe guide.
Getting there
Place des Festivals is served by the Place-des-Arts and Saint-Laurent metro stations. By bike, the racks in the Quartier des spectacles fill up quickly in the evening — arrive early or park a street away.

After the festival
If the festival leaves you wanting to rethink your own wardrobe, that is exactly what our styling consultations cover: building a wardrobe that survives winter, works in an interview, and still looks like you.
