Your first autumn in Montreal will bring 4°C mornings and 15°C afternoons, sometimes on the same day. Dressing well here does not take a big budget — it takes understanding the logic. Here is what you need to know about how to dress in Montreal in the autumn.
What to expect in October
On average, highs sit around 13°C and lows around 4–5°C. The gap between morning and afternoon is large, rain is frequent, and the first frosts can arrive at the end of the month. November is noticeably colder.
In other words, it is not winter yet, but it is no longer summer. This is the season when you leave in the morning wearing a coat and come home in the evening carrying it.
The three-layer rule
- A base layer: a t-shirt or light top, ideally cotton or fine wool.
- A mid layer: a sweater, cardigan or light jacket you can take off easily.
- An outer layer: a mid-season coat or a raincoat that blocks the wind.
The principle is simple: add or remove a layer depending on the time of day, rather than wearing one heavy garment that is too warm by noon.
The five pieces that do the work
- A waterproof mid-season coat or windbreaker. It is the most useful purchase of the month.
- Closed shoes that handle water. Canvas sneakers and sandals will not get you through October.
- A scarf: it transforms how cold you feel, for very little money.
- A warm sweater you actually like, because you will wear it a lot.
- A compact umbrella, kept in your bag.
What not to buy just yet
It is tempting to buy your winter coat in October. There is no need. Take time to see how you handle the cold, notice what people around you wear, and compare. Winter shopping works perfectly well in November.
On a tight budget, Montreal’s thrift stores are an excellent source of mid layers: sweaters, cardigans and jackets in good condition are easy to find.
The most common mistake
Overdressing in the morning. Newcomers often reach for their warmest coat at the first chill, then overheat in the metro, at the office or in class. Montreal interiors are well heated: dress so that you can take a layer off.
