The open fields
Most parks have free, first-come pitches, and every regular knows the hours when a pickup game is guaranteed. Show up with boots twice; by the third time, someone is saving you a spot.
The recreational leagues
These leagues accept individual registrations and place players on a team. This is where most arrival friendships are made.
The minimum gear
Boots suited to the surface, shin guards, and a water bottle. Everything else can wait until you know how often you will play.
