Running in Montréal: routes, free clubs and your first race

Lachine Canal, Mount Royal, free clubs and a first 5K: the newcomer’s guide to taking up running in Montréal.

Running is probably the easiest sport to adopt when you have just arrived: no team to find, no mandatory membership, no fixed schedule. A pair of shoes, and the city becomes your playing field. Here is where to start in Montréal.

Routes that make you love running

The Lachine Canal offers kilometres of flat, open path, perfect for beginners. Parc Jean-Drapeau adds water and views. And Mount Royal, with its gently sloping Olmsted road, remains the classic: climb slowly, come down proud. In summer, run early morning or in the evening — July humidity is unforgiving.

Running with others, for free

Free running clubs have multiplied: specialty shops, cafés, neighbourhood groups and online communities organize weekly runs open to all levels. It is one of the fastest ways to meet people: little talking on the climbs, plenty on the way back. Nobody judges your pace.

Your first race

Signing up for a 5K changes everything: training gains a purpose, and the finish line becomes a founding memory. Local races are festive and welcoming, with waves for every level. Pick a date two or three months out, follow a progressive plan, and beware of only one thing: the urge to do too much, too soon.

Gear, without overspending

Start simple: shoes suited to your stride — specialty shops analyze it for free — basic technical clothing and, once winter comes, layers rather than one heavy coat. The rest can wait. Our Sports section also covers soccer, recreational leagues and every other way to move and meet people.
