Arriving in Montréal in summer means landing in the middle of festival season. For weeks, music leaves the venues and takes over public squares, parks and alleys. Good news for a newcomer’s budget: much of that programming costs nothing.
Start with the free outdoor stages
The heart of the musical summer beats around the Quartier des spectacles, where the big festivals set up outdoor stages open to everyone. Jazz, world music, francophone song, electro: arrive early, bring a water bottle and let yourself drift. It is also one of the best places to watch the city mix.
Parks: open-air concert halls
From open-air cinema to neighbourhood concerts, Montréal’s parks are programmed all summer long. The Sunday tam-tams at the foot of Mount Royal have become a ritual: nobody asks where you are from, only whether you want to dance. Watch your borough’s bandstands too — their free concert series are often overlooked.
Discovering the local scene
Summer is the ideal gateway to the local scene: the artists who catch your ear on a free stage play intimate venues the rest of the year, often at gentle prices. Note the names, follow them, and you will have a cultural calendar for the whole autumn. Our Music section shares our discoveries and playlist every month.
Three reflexes of the thrifty music lover
First, last-minute tickets and student rates exist almost everywhere: ask. Second, several venues run pay-what-you-can concerts. Third, public libraries lend instruments and cultural passes in several neighbourhoods. The music here is generous; you just need to know where to listen.
