Sports
There is an ideal moment to join a soccer team in Montréal, and it is now. Outdoor autumn leagues start in September, registration for indoor winter leagues opens at the same time, and everyone is looking for players.
Why September beats January
By January, teams are formed and spots are taken. In September the rosters move: players leave, others arrive, and an individual registration almost always finds a place. It is also when you have time to settle in before the more competitive indoor season.
Three ways to find a team
- Recreational leagues with individual registration — you sign up alone, the league places you on a team.
- Free park pitches, where weekend pickup games are the best way to get noticed.
- Neighbourhood groups online, which post last-minute calls when a team is a player short.
What to plan for
Shoes suited to the surface — moulded studs for turf, flat soles for indoor — shin guards and a water bottle. Budget for a season fee covering referees, fields and the uniform. Our guide to joining a recreational league explains how it works.
The PremiereMinistar team is recruiting
We are building a team for a winter soccer tournament, open to everyone whatever your level. Registration is $110 and spots are limited. Once registered you get access to the player portal: fixture calendar, locations, times, and one-click availability. Register on the Sports page.
Beyond the game, it is often on a pitch that the first friendships here begin — we wrote about that in sport as the first door in.
